Getting There

Berneray is situated at the centre of the Western Isles chain of islands and is at the heart of the Hebridean Way, a cycle and walk route. It is connected to North Uist by causeway and to the island of Harris  by ferry.

By Ferry: Caledonian MacBrayne operate daily ferries from Uig in Skye to  Lochmaddy, North Uist,  all year round.  Lochmaddy is 10 miles from Berneray. There is also a daily ferry crossing between  Mallaig and Lochboisdale, South Uist, in the summer. Lochboisdale is 52 miles from Berneray.

Daily ferries to  Leverburgh, Harris, from Berneray, run  throughout the year.  The frequency of all crossings increase in the summertime and it is very important that car drivers book in advance. Low tides can  interfere with the timetable so do check for possible changes to schedules.

By Bus: Citylink operate a daily bus service from Glasgow to Mallaig and Uig in Skye.  The Glasgow to Uig  bus connects with the  Caledonian MacBrayne ferry.  The local bus service in North Uist meets the  daytime Lochmaddy ferry, with a short wait. On Berneray,  the bus south can be caught  five minutes  from the bunkhouse at the top of the road. The W16/17 bus connects Berneray  to Lochmaddy and Lochboisdale and does  4 through journeys daily. It is advisable to consult the local bus timetable before embarking on journeys.

By Car, Bike or Walking: Berneray is 10 miles from Lochmaddy. Drive out of Lochmaddy village and follow the signs to Sollas on the A865.  Stay on this road until the sign for the Berneray turn off and then take the B893 road until you cross the causeway and reach the island. You will shortly arrive at  a junction. John’s Bunkhouse is down on the left.

By Air: Logan Air operate at least 1 flight daily between  Glasgow and Benbecula. Benbecula is 30 miles away. There is also a daily flight from Inverness except at weekends. The connecting bus between Benbecula and Berneray stops at the airport. Specific connections would need to be checked on the local bus timetable in advance. W16/17

Cars can also be hired from Car Hire Hebrides. It is advisable to book these in advance.
